The next time someone tells me that we don’t need feminism anymore or that women are “essentially equal” to men, I will direct them to these numbers. Even some of the most liberal, progressive, well-educated, well-read, and seemingly pro-women men in my life have said things like this to me. However, every single time my 20 year old brother remarks at how bad things are for women in this world, both in the US and abroad, I beam with pride that he sees it. He understands. He gets it.
The following day, I attended a workshop about preventing gender violence, facilitated by Katz. There, he posed a question to all of the men in the room: “Men, what things do you do to protect yourself from being raped or sexually assaulted?”
Not one man, including myself, could quickly answer the question. Finally, one man raised his hand and said, “Nothing.” Then Katz asked the women, “What things do you do to protect yourself from being raped or sexually assaulted?” Nearly all of the women in the room raised their hand. One by one, each woman testified:
“I don’t make eye contact with men when I walk down the street,” said one.
“I don’t put my drink down at parties,” said another.
“I use the buddy system when I go to parties.”
“I cross the street when I see a group of guys walking in my direction.”
“I use my keys as a potential weapon.”
The women went on for several minutes, until their side of the blackboard was completely filled with responses. The men’s side of the blackboard was blank. I was stunned. I had never heard a group of women say these things before. I thought about all of the women in my life — including my mother, sister and girlfriend — and realized that I had a lot to learn about gender.
Trigger warning: rape, sexual assault, general grossness of all humanity
Now would be a great time to resign in protest.
What they just did, which was, let me remind you, posting screencaps of a woman’s rape that was uploaded to youtube, that goes so far beyond the pale of human decency….
I cannot believe they thought this was okay simply because they hid the identity of the woman.
There are survivors on that staff, or there were, last time I was at Jezebel. Any woman with her head screwed on straight can tell you that this shit is not okay.
Fuck them, fuck the Gawker network, and fuck the enablers.
well signal boosting this for those who read jezebel
and co-signing this
and being disgusted that someone would think it was okay to post screencaps of a woman’s rape without her consent
what the fuck
The editors haven’t even fucking addressed this yet OR taken down the images.
I fucking hate Jezebel and I hope they lose the majority of their readership over this.
Seriously this is really fucking bad. I just saw that article and I feel so uncomfortable and sick to my stomach having seen those images. This is a HUGE problem. Using these images without the woman’s consent is making her a victim for a second time and that is really unforgivable. The images are exploitative, voyeuristic, and completely unnecessary in the context of the story. Jezebel, I seriously thought you were better than this…

you thought I didn’t really notice. But I did. I wanted to high-five you.
Yesterday I had a pair of brothers in my store. One was maybe between 15-17. He was a wrestler at the local high school. Kind of tall, stocky and handsome. He had…
Definitely teared up. Beautiful.

Probably the first time I’ve ever agreed strongly with someone on Fox News.
“You know the one thing Chris Brown is guilty of?” “What?” “A felony.”
This. So much this.

[Image description: an ad by Summer’s Eve, advertising feminine hygiene products. Over a painting of Helen of Troy, the copy reads “It was more than her face that launched a thousand ships. A war was fought. A whole city fell. And thousands died. Because of a beautiful face? We think not. Although you’ll be hard-pressed to find any mention of her V in any history book, you can bet Helen of Troy knew what was up. Ad you can bet she knew how to take care of hers too. Just imagine if she’d had Summer’s Eve Cleansing Wash and Cleansing Cloths. pH-balanced, they help get you fresh and keep you fresh all day long. No telling how many ships would have been launched then.”]

#SHE LAUNCHED SHIPS LITERALLY OUT OF HER VAGINA
Is this seriously a thing now, world? IS THIS WHAT WE HAVE BECOME. I’m also amazed at the fact that they got through the entire ad without having to expressly say what they make or what it’s for once!
(oblig)
Summereve is really bad at this.
Every single time I see a Summer’s Eve ad, I die a little on the inside.
Also, can we please start using the word VAGINA?! What is this “v” bullshit?!
Selling products to women: you’re doin’ it wrong.
